Burcu: “Resumption of the negotiations is possible, if they eliminate this decision completely.”

Presidential Spokesman Barış Burcu stated that resuming negotiations is only possible if the Greek Cypriot Parliament eliminates the wrong decision to commemorate the 1950 Enosis plebiscite in schools.

The written statement of the Presidential Spokesperson Barış Burcu is as follows:
President Mustafa Akıncı previously informed the UNSG Special Advisor Espen Barth Eide that he could have a social meeting with the Greek Cypriot leader Mr. Anastasiades, if the new bill aimed at rectifying the wrong decision by the Greek Cypriot Parliament on the commemoration of the 1950 Enosis plebiscite at schools would be approved by the Committee on Educational Affairs and Culture of the Greek Cypriot Parliament.  President Akıncı also previously told Mr. Eide that March 30th, 31st and April 2nd would be suitable for this event.
As it has been recently announced, the Committee on Educational Affairs and Culture of the Greek Cypriot Parliament adopted the necessary decision with the votes from AKEL and DISY members. The said social meeting will be held on April 2nd in the buffer zone.
As the President had explained before, only complete elimination of the commemoration of Enosis plebiscite in schools through the necessary steps and measures taken in the plenum of the Greek Cypriot Parliament and in the Greek Cypriot administration will make it possible for the resumption of the formal comprehensive settlement talks.
