“Geneva Summit is a phase for decision making and the final stop”

President Mustafa Akıncı made evaluations about Geneva conference to be held on June 28th.

President Akıncı said that the Greek Cypriot side has recently begun to bring up pre-conditions regarding security and guarantees at the negotiating table.

“I hope that the Greek Cypriot side would not bring its reluctance to the Geneva,” said the President and reminded that it is the first time that the negotiations will be held at parallel tables in the summit.

Noting that the Security and Guarantees chapter will be negotiated during the five-party conference and bilateral meetings, President Akıncı said: “Our aim is to see the whole picture since negotiation period, at which  the matters were discussed separately has   passed.”

He said that the Geneva Summit is a phase of decisions and the last stop and that the Turkish Cypriot side will attend the summit with this determination. However, it is not possible to get a result by unilateral determination, he added.

In his statements, President Akıncı mentioned the embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people and emphasised the issue of preventing the right of participating in sports competition, which is one of the most important ones.

Underlining that sports is a human right and the embargo imposed is a crime against humanity, Akıncı stated that the whole world should hear about this and put a lid on the unjustness imposed to the Turkish Cypriot people.
President Akıncı noted that he does not approve that the right of playing sports is being associated with the negotiations and added that they are committing a crime against Turkish Cypriot youth, who are not even allowed to play with the Turkish teams.
President Akıncı underlined that the only way to overcome such obstacles imposed to the Turkish Cypriot people is to get a fair solution to the Cyprus problem.
