Following a week of talks with UN Secretary-General’s temporary Special Envoy Jane Holl Lute, President Akıncı stated that they met today with the Greek Cypriot leader Anastasiades in an informal cocktail in the UN buffer zone.
Noting that the meetings with Mrs. Lute were intensive and beneficial, President Akıncı said “We are not at the point of saying that we have completed the terms of reference, which are the main purpose of these meetings.”
President Akıncı stated that the efforts to complete the terms of reference will continue and the parties agreed on this matter. “We will continue to work for successful outcome and completion of the terms of reference, which will constitute a new starting point.”
Reminding that as of the end of the month, they will be in New York for the UN General Assembly, President Akıncı pointed out that he will meet with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, although the date and the time are still not determined. “Mr. Guterres wants a tripartite meeting. It is not expected to happen during the work of the UN General Assembly. The meeting may take place at a later date to be announced following the end of the General Assembly,” the President added.
“Lute’s efforts will continue”
After the end of the work of the UN General Assembly, the UN Secretary-General’s temporary Special Envoy Jane Holl Lute will continue the efforts, noted the President. “ These efforts will, of course, include contacts with guarantor countries,” he added.
