Academic-Historian Meltem Onurkan Samani received her bachelor degree in History from Middle East Technical University and completed her Master’s and Phd in History from Hacettepe University. She has served in various academic and administrative positions at European University of Lefke (EUL) since 1995. She became a part-time lecturer at Eastern Mediterranean University after being dismissed from (EUL) for taking part in trade union movement in 2008. She served as the Secretary General of the Communal Democracy Party in 2009. She was reinstated to her post at European University of Lefke in 2010.
Her fields of interests include Cyprus’ political and socio-economic history, nationalist movements, colonialism in Cyprus and colonial institutions,
Turkish Cypriot political culture, History Teaching and teaching methods in history and social sciences.
Assistant Professor Dr. Onurkan-Samani who authored history text books and worked as a teacher trainer is the co-President of the prestigious bi-communal Association for Historical Dialogue and Research Foundation (AHDR).
Meltem Onurkan Samani is married to fellow Assistant Professor Hasan Samani and has 2 children.
