President Akıncı speaks with the UN Secretary-General on the phone
President Mustafa Akıncı had a phone conversation with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres yesterday evening. The UN Secretary-General Guterres reaffirmed his readiness to contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem during the phone conversation which took place upon his request.
Indicating his satisfaction over the leaders’ upcoming meeting on 9th August, Guterres expressed his wish for a fruitful meeting. Guterres added that, following the meeting, finalizing the work conducted by Lute with regards to the terms of reference would be instrumental.
During their conversation with the Secretary-General, President Mustafa Akıncı highlighted the importance of political will and determination for the solution of the Cyprus problem and reminded the concrete and constructive stance put forth by the Turkish Cypriot side at all times.
The UN Secretary-General Guterres expressed that he will be delighted to meet with President Akıncı who will be in New York on the occasion of the UN General Assembly in September.
Stating that a process leading to an informal five-party meeting should be well organized and carefully prepared, the UN Secretary-General proposed to meet with the two leaders in a trilateral meeting after the UN General Assembly. President Akıncı responded that he welcomes such a meeting.
