“The Greek Cypriot side must also show commitment”
President Mustafa Akıncı and Foreign Affairs Minister of Turkey Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu highlighted that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready to participate in a conference to be held in Geneva without preconditions and to discuss all issues, including security and guarantees.
Following the meeting at the Presidency, President Akıncı held a joint press conference with Çavuşoğlu. President Akıncı said that they want to reach a conclusion but added that it is not possible to progress by putting forward preconditions. The Greek Cypriot side must also show commitment to the joint declaration made on 11 February 2014 just as the Turkish Cypriot side, the President said.
Reiterating that they will attend the working dinner which will be held on June 4 upon the invitation by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, President Akıncı said:
“I hope that the Greek Cypriot side reciprocates our positive stance in the same manner and accept to meet with us without preconditions by adhering to all agreements reached until today. I wish that beneficial results will be yielded there, for all related parties.”
President Akıncı expressed hope that the stance of Mr. Anastasiadis in New York will help pave the way for Geneva.
ÇAVUŞOĞLU: "CRITICAL PROCESS"
Stating that the negotiations are in a critical period because of the preconditions put forward by the Greek Cypriot side, Mr. Çavuşoğlu reminded that Eide’s shuttle diplomacy brought no results.
Pointing out that the declaration and parameters of 11 February 2014 and the parameters of Geneva declaration on 12 January 2017 are amply clear, Mr. Çavuşoğlu said: "Therefore, putting forward new proposals, in an attempt to distort and contradict the current ones,is equivalent to prolonging the process. This is also about playing in favour of domestic politics. On the other hand, these are futile efforts that are consuming our energy. We must spend our energy towards reaching a solution and focus on the solution. "
