The interoperability of mobiles phones begins across the island

The decision, which was agreed by President Mustafa Akıncı and Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades has been implemented. The interoperability of the mobile phones has begun across the island today.

The decision on the implementation of the interoperability of mobile phones across the island was put into practice with the phone calls of the two leaders, today at 12.45 p.m.
The first phone calls took place between the two leaders, facilitated by the Special Representative to the Secretary-General on Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar. President Akıncı used Spehar’s Greek Cypriot mobile phone line, while Greek Cypriot leader Anastasiades used Spehar’s Turkish Cypriot mobile phone line in order to test the interoperability.
President Akıncı thanked all the institutions, organisations and individuals who contributed to the efforts to eliminate the problems created by the lack of operability of mobile phones for years on both sides of Cyprus.
President Akıncı said the following:
“This is a very important Confidence Building Measure (CBM). Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, travelling to both sides of Cyprus, were losing contact with their loved ones. While we are living at a time, when the communication never disconnects, no matter where you go around the world - even in most remote areas-, it was not acceptable to lose communication on the same island when you cross the border from one side to the other. It is a welcoming development to have this connection established, although it is via a Swiss communication centre. In the future, I hope we will have direct communication without the need of any intermediaries. It took long time to implement this CBM. Finally, it is implemented. I believe it will be to the benefit of everyone living in Cyprus. Following this achievement, I wish solutions in other areas that will be beneficial to both communities will be further developed. Needless to say, the main goal remains to be a mutually acceptable, comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem, based on political equality, freedom, and security. No doubt this kind of positive developments will build confidence between the communities.”
According to the statement by the UN, it is announced that confidence building measure with regards to the mobile phones has been implemented with the aim of dialogue, trust and cooperation between both sides.
