President Ersin Tatar attends ceremony commemorating the 48th anniversary of the liberation of Gazimağusa

President Ersin Tatar participated in the ceremony held at the Victory Monument commemorating the 48th anniversary of the liberation of Gazimağusa.
 
The ceremony, which was held at the İsmet İnönü Boulevard in Gazimağusa, commenced with the laying of wreaths at the monument, and continued with a moment of silence that was followed by the National Anthem as the flags of Türkiye and TRNC were hoisted.
 
Addressing the ceremony, President Tatar stated that the Turkish Cypriot people were being massacred in the  nearby villages at the Mesaoria Plain and added that the town of Gazimağusa was surrounded and attacked by heavily armed Greek-Greek Cypriot forces. “The Turkish Cypriot People put on a legendary resistance and waited for the arrival of the Turkish army. It was the second phase of the Peace Operation which stopped the atrocities, where Turkish Cypriot people embraced the Turkish army,” the President said.
 
The President added that “Gazimağusa has been developed that suits the glory of our veterans, and has become one of the most valuable cities of our country”.
 
Emphasising that the policy being pursued with the full support of motherland Türkiye is to continue our existence on the island on the basis of sovereign equality, President Tatar said: "an independent Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will exist forever". 
 
President Tatar stated that the Turkish Cypriot people experienced much pain and suffering the the face of atrocities committed against them by the Greek-Greek Cypriot forces with the aim of exterminating them and annexing the island with Greece.  “It is very important that we do not forget the sufferings of our past,” he said.
 
Expressing that our mujahideen put up great  resistance for a long time and won victory together with the Turkish army, President Tatar commemorated all the martyrs and veterans with respect and gratitude and said: "May all our martyrs and veterans who have passed away rest in eternal peace and may the veterans still alive have healthy long and happy lives." 
 
The ceremony continued with folk dances and ended with a musical concert and a parade.
