President Ersin Tatar attends the 59th anniversary of the establishment of the Police Organisation

President Ersin Tatar attended a reception held to commemorate the 59th anniversary of the establishment of the Police Organisation.
The President, who addressed the event held in the gardens of the Police General Directorate in Lefkoşa, commended the police force for their commitment, sense of duty and work in law enforcement over the past 59 years.
President Tatar stated: “Our Police Organisation has continued to build on its experiences and capabilities over many decades of being in existence. I commend our police, who are working with such devotion, and built a more efficient structure and a faster working mechanism and coordination. I respectfully pay tribute to those who are not with us today, who have been instrumental in making our police force a success over the years.”
President Tatar also commemorated the Champion Angels, teachers and families who lost their lives in the catastrophic earthquakes that took place in Türkiye on February 6, 2023.
Drawing attention to the physical infrastructure of the Police School and the quality-based education provided at the institution, President Tatar emphasised that the “police force will continue to develop with a view to providing a high standard of service to the country and all its people”.
Stating that the police force will be able to address new challenges in crime prevention and law enforcement through improvements in the technical infrastructure and legal ammendments to the relevent legislation governing the police, the President stated: “Once the police has the relevent legal authority, our police force will be able to provide even more effective security to all our people and residents.”
President Tatar said the Police Organisation will continue to build new relations internationally and increase its capacity after the Organisation of Turkic States admitted the TRNC as an observer member at the summit in Samarakand, Uzbekistan, in November 2022.
The President pointed out that the police force, which was established 59 years ago with limited resources, personnel and equipment, is today a pride of the TRNC, providing law enformcement, crime prevention and security to people and their properties. He also added that the police play an important role in protecting the rights and freedoms of each citizen provided in the constitution.
President Tatar explained that during the years of the National Struggle of the Turkish Cypriot People, the police, who had fulfilled their obligations in the struggle for social existence as well as providing internal security, succeeded in their efforts to become an “exemplary institution in all circumstances throughout the historical process”.
President Tatar noted that the capabilities of the police in the field of intelligence and internal security have also increased, which has helped law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime, crime prevention and cooperating with Türkiye to ensure law enforcement is implemented.
The President stated however that he has been following with sadness the “increasing number of fatalities in traffic accidents,” adding that “political steps should be taken in light of scientific data, so that we can find ways in tackling this problem, in the hope that lives are saved”.
Pointing out that the police has a responsibility for increasing inspections and carrying out roadside checks on motorists so as to make our roads safer, the President stated that it is equally important to provide young people education with regards to road traffic safety, and to stand clear from populism and implement penalties on motorists found to be breaching the highway code.
President Tatar expressed his graitude to all the police officers who have devoted their lives to serving the public, and to everybody who have made the police force a success and trustworthy organisation, and wished everybody peace, prosperity and success.
