President Ersin Tatar participated in the ceremony held at the mausoleum of Founding President Rauf Raif Denktaş in Lefkoşa to mark the 12th anniversary of his passing.
Addressing the ceremony held on Saturday, January 13, President Tatar paid tribute to Founding President Denktaş for his life-long devotion to the just cause of the Turkish Cypriot People.
“Founding President Denktaş made his mark in world history, not only in the Island of Cyprus,” President Tatar said. “He grew up adopting the words of his grandfather, who used to wonder when the Turkish forces will once again return to the Island of Cyprus”.
“President Denktaş specifically asked that history remembers him as the person who brought the Turkish army back to the Island of Cyprus,” President Tatar said.
President Tatar recalled that it was from the voice of Denktaş the whole world had learnt that the Turkish army was landing on the island by parachute and at sea – at the start of the Cyprus Peace Operation on July 20, 1974.
