President Ersin Tatar has departed for New York where he will meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
President Tatar, who held a press conference at Ercan Airport prior to his departure, stated that a settlement to the Cyprus issue is not possible if the authority of the TRNC is not respected.
President Tatar stated: “As is known, our policy is for a realistic two State settlement in Cyprus. New and formal negotiations for a settlement cannot be started unless the sovereign equality and equal international status of the TRNC is accepted and reaffirmed, which is a policy fully supported by Motherland and Guarantor Türkiye. This is the message we shall continue to convey in New York.”
“Respect should be shown to the TRNC, otherwise a settlement cannot be reached”
President Tatar added: “It is not possible to reach a settlement to the Cyprus issue in a set-up where the authority of the TRNC is not respected. We are in favour of communication and dialogue. We are sincere in the search for a settlement within the framework of the principles we have set, but it must be accepted that the TRNC exists. We will explain this on different platforms in New York.”
"We are going to explain the just cause and the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot People as well as the injustices we are continuing to face,” President Tatar said.
