President Ersin Tatar issues a message marking the 66th anniversary of the “27-28 January 1958 Resistance”
“Sixty-six years ago, the Turkish Cypriot People put forward a struggle where our martyrs sacrificed their lives for our freedom and dignity, proving that we will not surrender to the British and Greek Cypriots”
President Ersin Tatar issued a message on the 66th anniversary marking the “27-28 January 1958 Resistance”, in which the British colonial administration exercised disproportionate force that resulted in the martyrdom of seven people – five of which were in Lefkoşa and two in Gazimağusa, with many more injured.
The written message of the President reads as follows:
“The 27-28 January 1958 Resistance is of great importance for the Turkish Cypriot People, in their struggle to live in freedom under their own national and religious identity in Cyprus.
This resistance proved to the world that Turkish Cypriot People would not surrender to the British rulers of the Island at the time, nor to the Greek Cypriots. The Turkish Cypriots paid the price for this uprising at the cost of sacrificing martyrs. The dream of uniting Cyprus to Greece (ENOSIS) of the Greek-Greek Cypriot duo has not changed ever since the departure of the British colonial administration. It is this dream that forms the basis of all the lies being conveyed to the world, and the continued obstructionist approach aimed at keeping the Turkish Cypriot People isolated.
Turkish Cypriots today are ready to make any sacrifice for their freedom and security just as they did in the past.
I pay my deepest respect to all of our martyrs who sacrificed their lives in this just cause and express my gratitude to all those who put forward the honourable resistance on 27-28 January 1958 for Turkish Cypriots to live in dignity, freedom and security."
