President Ersin Tatar makes a statement about the "Shed Light on Justice" march for the Champion Angels: “Justice must be served”

“We will always support the families of our Champion Angels and want justice to be served”

President Ersin Tatar participated in the “Shed Light on Justice” march that was held in Gazimağusa for the Champion Angels volleyball team of the Türk Maarif College who died in the catastrophic earthquakes that occurred in the Republic of Türkiye on February 6, 2023.

The volleyball team had been staying at the Isias hotel in Adıyaman together with their coaches and some family members and were in the country for a volleyball tournament at the time. However, the hotel had collapsed in the earthquake.

Speaking to the press during the march that was held on Thursday evening, President Tatar stated that “we continue to feel the deep pain and sadness at the loss of life which came about following the catastrophic earthquakes that occurred on February 6”.  The President added that “although the agenda of our country changes, the Association to Preserve the Champion Angels is continuing to voice the call for justice to be served, and to keep the names of those who lost their lives alive”.

President Ersin Tatar continued as follows:

“Nobody can silence this voice, which is unstoppable. We are here to shout out to the world our plea in the name of the Champion Angels. We are in deep pain and sadness. The Turkish Cypriot People are in bereavement and continue to cry. It is not possible to forget the losses and pain that has been inflicted. We want justice to be served for our children and for their families. We have great trust in the Turkish justice system. We stand firmly behind the call for justice to be served as the families, loved ones and that of the public. It is not easy to experience such pain and loss of this magnitude in a place such as the TRNC.   Our country has its own characteristics, sensitivities and kinship ties.  The Turkish Cypriot People, who suffered greatly during the years of the national struggle, have once again experienced this great pain and it is impossible to forget it.  I reiterate my wish for patience and strength to the families. We will always support the families of our Champion Angels and want justice to be served.  We stand firmly behind this voice.”
