President Ersin Tatar participated in the Republic Cortege in Lefkoşa – held to celebrate the 101st anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Türkiye.
Addressing the participants in Dereboyu, President Tatar paid tribute to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Founder of the Republic of Türkiye.
President Tatar underlined that the Republic of Türkiye gained its independence, freedom and liberty with the proclamation of the Republic 101 years ago.
Stating that the “Turkish Cypriot people are continuing their struggle for independence in Cyprus with their love for the Republic and desire to coexist as a free People with the inspiration they received from Motherland Türkiye”, President Tatar stated that “with the torch lit by the Great Leader, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Turkish Cypriot People have been putting up a long-standing struggle in defending their equal inherent rights, sovereignty and freedom, which dates back to the British Colonial Administration, the years when there were attrocities committed against us between 1963 to 1974 – through to the proclamation of the TRNC on November 15, 1983.
Stating that the Turkish Cypriot people had taken their place as equal co-founding partners of the 1960 Republic of Cyprus, President Tatar stated that the treaties establishing the republic were signed during the reign of Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, of the Republic of Türkiye.
He added that the Turkish Cypriots had been expelled from the state apparatus of the partnership republic by force of arms in December 1963 by Greek Cypriots under the aspiration to unite Cyprus with Greece. Stating that for 11 years there were atrocities committed against Turkish Cypriots which culminated with the coup d'etat by the Greek Junta on July 15, 1974 and the declaration of the ‘Hellenic Republic of Cyprus’, President Tatar said it was an obligation by Türkiye, as one of the guarantor powers, to undertake the Cyprus Peace Operation to save the Turkish Cypriot People from extermination.
Stating that “we are continuing to work for the welfare, survival and future of our people in cooperation with Motherland Türkiye,” President Tatar underlined the importance of Türkiye providing political, economic and social support for the Turkish Cypriot People, who are continuing to be subjected to inhumane isolation.
President Tatar stated that the Turkish security forces are “putting forward extraordinary efforts to protect the security of the Republic of Türkiye in the Southeastern region of Anatolia”.
Noting that the “borders of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are also protected for the peace and security of the people”, President Tatar reiterated that “a settlement can be reached in Cyprus on the basis of our sovereign equality and equal international status, with the guarantee of Türkiye, and the continuing presence of the Turkish army”.
President Tatar congratulated the participants on the 101st anniversary of Republic Day, and wished for this century to be one of peace and prosperity for all.
