President Tatar said that the Turkish Cypriot people had “staged a very big resistance in these lands as part of our struggle to coexist,” in Cyprus.
“Whatever the Çanakkale war is for the people of Turkey -- which was led by Great Leader, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades in arms, the Glorious Erenköy Resistance carries the same importance for the Turkish Cypriot people. Turkish Cypriot students from Anatolia and different parts of the world, left their studies half way, made their way to Erenköy and heroically took part in the great resistance. The Freedom Fighters of Erenköy wrote a legend and wholeheartedly supported the just cause of the Turkish Cypriot people,” President Tatar said.
THE MESSAGE CONVEYED TO THE WORLD FROM ERENKÖY. . .
The President explained that the Erenköy Resistance had sent a message to the world that there are two peoples who are entitled to have a say in Cyprus, and that the Turkish Cypriots also have sovereign rights. “The struggle that was waged back then, is the same struggle that we are putting forward at the negotiating table,” he said.
President Tatar said that Turkey had exercised its legitimate right as a guarantor and staged the Peace Operation in 1974, adding: “Today, we are continuing on our path with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, in our own sovereign area.”
“WE ARE PEPARING ERENKÖY FOR THE FUTURE”

“Whilst I commend the organisers for this tree planting campaign where 1,571 saplings are being planted in Erenköy, with this campaign, we are reiterating yet again our entitlement to Erenköy as well as preparing it for the future. We are all here today in remembrance of the great Erenköy Resistance.”
“BASIS OF SOVEREIGN EQUALITY OF TWO STATES COEXISTING SIDE-BY-SIDE IS ESSENTIAL”
President Tatar also referred to the Cyprus issue, saying that “if an agreement is going to be reached, it is essential that this is based on the sovereign equality of two States that are in coexistence side-by-side”.
