President Ersin Tatar visits the home of GÜNSEL, the first exclusively produced vehicle of the TRNC
“Investment in zero-emission electric road cars that will be exclusively produced in the TRNC will start-up a new industry and open a fresh new area for employment and will turn the TRNC’s budget deficit into a budget surplus.”

President Ersin Tatar visited the headquarters of the GÜNSEL – the first vehicle that will be exclusively produced in the TRNC, where he was briefed on the preparations being made for mass production.
The President, who took a test drive of the GÜNSEL first B9 model at the driving test centre in Lefkoşa, held a meeting with officials and Board of Directors of NEU. The President was briefed on the studies, preparations for mass production, future projects and projections as well as the contributions that GÜNSEL will make to the TRNC’s economy. NEU Founding Rector Dr. Suat Günsel’s son, Professor Dr. İrfan Günsel, who briefed the President, is leading the drive in realising his father’s dream.
Speaking during the visit, President Tatar “commended” the Günsel family and the hard work of the NEU family in succeeding to realise a long-standing dream.
“I sincerely congratulate Founding Rector Dr. Suat Günsel, the Board of Directors of NEU, the Chairman of the Board Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel, and all those who contributed to the realisation of this dream. . .we are witnessing the start-up of a new industry,” the President said. “This success story shows just how important it is to develop engineering technology and services in our country. This great vision shows what can be achieved in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus through determination, persistence and belief in our State. The GÜNSEL will significantly contribute to our economy, and this will also have positive effects across different sectors as well as providing employment in a new field, in a new industry.”
President Tatar stated that the realisation of this dream, which he described as “meriting great respect, will also act as an incentive to future generations and provide confidence and belief that success is attainable despite the unjust isolation.” He added that “GÜNSEL models will be produced en masse and will be exported to other countries. This will have a significant effect on turning around our budget deficit into a budget surplus.”
The President also said it was important to note that the zero-emission vehicle “will run completely on electric and will be of huge benefit to the environment”. The President stated that the TRNC must inevitably pass onto the use of electrically run vehicles, which is an ultimate goal across the globe. “Increasing fuel prices have become detrimental to the consumer and is contributing to inflation and the cost of living,” the President said. “However, with the introduction of electric-run vehicles, we will be able to save significant amounts of money and spending on fuel. . .and pave the way for more investments in our country.”
Underlining that “electric vehicles are a big step towards protecting the environment and preventing pollution”, President Tatar stated that they are also of immense benefit, due to lesser air pollution from exhaust fumes to human health.
"It is an extremely exciting project for the TRNC to make its name known in the world,” the President added.
President Tatar also referred to his recent meeting in Konya, Türkiye, with the President of Azerbaijan, İlham Aliyev, and said “the importance of Azerbaijan’s support for the development of the TRNC, which is a Turkish State in the eastern Mediterranean, was an issue that was discussed during our meeting”.
Expressing that President Aliyev had stated that Azerbaijan, like the Republic of Türkiye, is also supporting the Turkish Cypriot people, President Tatar added: “My meeting with President Aliyev and his support to the Turkish Cypriot people was publicised on the official web page of the Presidency of Azerbaijan.”
President Tatar said: “The Turkish Cypriot people continue with their resistance and struggle as the TRNC despite the unjust isolation and attempts to further our isolation by the Greek Cypriot side. The GÜNSEL vehicle project is an important step in this struggle and the development of the TRNC.”
