President Ersin Tatar's Special Representative M. Ergün Olgun meets with United Kingdom Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador James Kariuki Special Representative

Ergün Olgun during his meeting with United Kingdom Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador James Kariuki pointed to the UK’s responsibilities that are different from other countries.

The Special Representative reminded that this difference takes root from the fact that the UK is a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council, a guarantor country and a pen holder on Cyprus issue and as a matter of course, the Turkish Cypriot side has expectations from the United Kingdom to maintain a balanced approach to both sides.

Olgun underlined that the two sides in Cyprus are inherently equal and reminded that the failure of the negotiations, which have continued for more than 50 years, resulted from the fact that equality of the sides was not put into effect.

Ergün Olgun indicated that reconciliation cannot be reached in Cyprus problem upon an imposed and collapsed ground and reiterated that a new process could only begin with the reaffirmation and respect of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot side.

Referring to the 6 cooperation proposals submitted by the Turkish Cypriot side to the Greek Cypriot leader through the UN Secretary General, Olgun expressed the Turkish Cypriot side’s expectation from the United Kingdom to encourage the Greek Cypriot side to approach these proposals positively.

Confidence Building Measures and Bilateral Technical Committees Coordinator Güneş Onar, Special Advisor Osman Ertuğ and TRNC Washington Representative Office Third Secretary Denil Ertuğ Akın also attended the meeting.
