President Ersin Tatar participated in the ceremony held for the opening of the 10th period of the second legislative year, following a three-month summer recess.
Speaking to the press following the ceremonial opening, President Tatar pointed out the importance of the need to expedite the passing of legislation and reforms in order to improve the conditions and to address the issues faced by the country. The President welcomed the continuation of the work of the Parliamentary committees and the implementation of certain laws in the summer term.
President Tatar pointed to the “extraordinary developments”, such as Greece's armament activities in the Aegean islands, the US lifting of the arms embargo on South Cyprus as well as the Ukraine-Russia war. Stating that these are all a cause of concern for the Turkish Cypriot people, the President said: “Turkish Cypriot People can be comforted by the assurances frequently reiterated by the highest authorities of Motherland Türkiye, who state that the rights, interests and the security of Turkish Cypriots will not be compromised. . .and that necessary measures are being taken.”
The President referred to the “historic step” taken in New York where Republic of Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan invited the international community to formally recognise the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in his address at the UN General Assembly, on September 20. He added that President Erdoğan had also in his address called for an end to the inhuman isolation and embargoes on the Turkish Cypriot People. President Tatar underlined the importance for everybody to come together and to carry out intensive work with the objective of strengthening the economic and social structure of the TRNC.
“Our Parliament is expected to make extraordinary contributions through intensive work, fast-tracking legislation and carrying out reforms,” the President said.
Stating that the country is continuing its preparations for the post-pandemic period, the President said it is his greatest wish to see the “emergence of a more efficient and sustainable structure will” in the TRNC. He said Parliament will be making the preliminary preparations and pass the necessary laws and reforms to achieve these objectives.
“The basis for looking to the future with hope and confidence has been created”
Emphasising that the basis for looking to the future with hope and confidence has been created with regards to the Cyprus issue, President Tatar stated that “formal negotiations can be started after the acknowledgment has been made of the sovereign equality and equal international status rights of the Turkish Cypriot People”. The President said that these are “inherent rights” emanate from history as well as the 1959-1960 treaties that had established the partnership republic – which has been usurped by the Greek Cypriot Side who ejected the Turkish Cypriots out of the state apparatus with force of arms. The President added that basis of negotiations for a federal solution have been exhausted due to the Greek Cypriot Side’s countless rejections for more than a half-a-century. He added that this new policy is fully supported by the Republic of Türkiye, which has been repeated by the Turkish Grand National Assembly Parliamentary Speaker Mustafa Şentop, where he called for the formal recognition of the TRNC by the international community.
“It is our greatest wish for the TRNC to become stronger.”
The President said that it is his greatest wish to see the strengthening of the TRNC in the economic, social and socio-political fields, adding that a strong TRNC is indeed essential for both Türkiye and TRNC security in the eastern Mediterranean.
President Tatar wished all deputies success in the new legislative year, as well as benefits from the new Presidency, Parliamentary buildings and the National Park -- that is to be gifted by Motherland Türkiye and constructed in Lefkoşa, as announced by the Republic of Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan last year.
“The Republic of Türkiye is closely monitoring the developments and will take the necessary measures when necessary”
The President also criticised the US lifting of the arms embargo on South Cyprus and the inclusion of the Greek Cypriot Side in a military cooperation programme.
Noting that the President of the Republic of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Minister of National Defence of the Republic of Türkiye Hulusi Akar and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu emphasise at every opportunity that the Turkish Cypriots are not alone, President Tatar stated that Türkiye is following developments closely and will take the necessary measures if and when necessary.
Expressing that the UK also has responsibilities as a guarantor power, President Tatar said: "As the TRNC, the only country we trust is the Republic of Türkiye.”
