President Tatar attends the symposium on “The Impact of Covid-19 on TRNC Civil Aviation”

President Ersin Tatar participated as an Honorary Speaker at the symposium regarding “The Impact of Covid-19 on TRNC Civil Aviation” held at the Akdeniz Karpaz University in Lefkoşa on the occasion of December 7, International Civil Aviation Day.

In his speech during the symposium, President Tatar underlined the importance of civil aviation for the country since Cyprus is an island. He stated that “despite the isolation on the TRNC, we can fly to anywhere in the world via Turkey,” and he drew attention to the “support afforded by Turkey to the Turkish Cypriots in all circumstances”.

Calling on the international civil aviation authorities and emphasising that the lack of direct flights to the TRNC is against human rights, President Tatar pointed out that in an environment where the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus reaches a potential of 4 million passengers per year, the world civil aviation authorities should end the embargo imposed on Turkish Cypriots due to the veto of the Republic of Cyprus.

President Tatar stated that direct flights should be allowed to the TRNC as from 2021, adding: “We will continue to explain this injustice at every platform.”

President Tatar emphasised that during the unofficial meeting with the Greek Cypriot leader Anastasides, he raised the issue of the flight embargo advising Mr Anastasiadis that this is injustice to which Mr Anastasiades responded by saying "if we remove the veto, we will recognise you" stating that this cannot be accepted.

Emphasising that the TRNC exists as a state with its institutions and organizations, President Ersin Tatar said that the TRNC has ties with hundreds of countries within the context of higher education and trade. He also drew attention to the fact that embargo on the direct flight is unacceptable and this stance lacks good intentions.

The President stated that efforts have been made and are continuing at the top level with contacts in the UN and the UK,  to lift the embargoes on direct flights and reiterated that the initiatives on the subject will continue.

The President underlined that the wealth of the TRNC, higher education and tourism investments will accelerate the development of the economy. President Tatar emphasized that the TRNC gained more importance in the region with the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and that necessary steps have been taken in cooperation with motherland Turkey in Blue Homeland.

President Ersin Tatar expressed his belief that the Mediterranean Karpas University will be one of the leading universities in the TRNC and thanked everybody for the seminar.
