President Ersin Tatar received the Bayrak Radio Television Corporation (BRTK), Meryem Özkurt, and President of the BRTK Board of Directors, Özer Kanlı, on the occasion of the 57th anniversary of the establishment of the BRTK.
At the meeting, President Tatar stated that state-owned BRTK had played an important role in broadcasting the voice of Turkish Cypriots’ to the world -- first with radio, continuing with television and internet broadcasting. “BRTK and its broadcasts have made a very important contribution to our just struggle and it continues to do so,” said the President, and he congratulated the BRTK family for their success and commemorated those who served for BRTK in the past.
Stating that they defend the cooperation of two States coexisting side by side on the basis of sovereign equality in Cyprus, President Tatar said that on December 21, 1963, ENOSIS [Union of Cyprus with Greece] was the aspiration of the Greek and Greek Cypriot duo, adding that this objective was being exploited using their membership of the EU. Expressing that the media broadcasts were an important part of the fabric of the democracy of the country, President Tatar pointed out the importance of adopting a national stance and national consciousness. The President noted that the BRTK, which was established by freedom fighters who loved their flag and homeland, continues to act as the voice of the Turkish Cypriots.
President Tatar said: “TRNC’s status is strengthened by developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and with the support of the Republic of Turkey, we continue even more to put forward a vigorous struggle. It is indeed important to convey this message to the youth,” he said.
President Tatar celebrated the 57th establishment anniversary of BRTK, emphasising the importance of new and effective broadcasters, and he stressed the need to pass a BRTK law.
