TRNC Consul General to İstanbul Fatma Demirel received the award on behalf of the President due to his absence. Ms. Demirel read out a message on behalf of the President.
In his message to the ceremony, President Tatar said: “Although I cannot be with you due to our busy schedule and pre-arranged meetings, I would like to express that I am very happy and honoured that you have considered me worthy of the 'Visionary of the Year Award'.”
Stating that in today's rapidly changing world, it has become difficult to predict "how the future will be shaped and to produce appropriate solutions", President Tatar added: “The policy we pursue today is to maintain and guarantee the existence of the Turkish Cypriot People, which incorporates what has been learnt from history as well as understanding correctly the conjuncture of today. What I understand from the concept of 'vision' is to produce a feasible projection for the future based on experience and knowledge. Thank you for the Visionary of the Year Award, which I accept with great appreciation."
In reference to the Cyprus issue, President Tatar said in his message: "While developing our policy and vision for a realistic and sustainable 'Two State Settlement in Cyprus', I believe that we have created a tangible way forward, that will finally enable us to reach a settlement to the decades old issue of the Island of Cyprus, based on historical and objective facts."
President Tatar added that the "negotiations that have been held on a bizonal bicommunal federal basis that have been held for more than half-a-century have not reached a conclusion, and as a consequence the Turkish Cypriot Side have in fact become hostage to never ending negotiations, and continue to suffer unjust isolation. We continue to patiently to explain our just cause for fairness and justice, and for the reaffirmation of our equal inherent rights."
Stating that the Island of Cyprus has two inherent co-founders of the Republic of Cyprus that had been established between the Turkish Cypriot People and the Greek Cypriot People, President Tatar said: "The Turkish Cypriot People were expelled from the state apparatus of the republic by force of arms in 1963. We have been governing ourselves since the partnership republic was destroyed. However, we are as sovereign as Greek Cypriot People and have the same inherent rights, namely our sovereign equality and equal international status."
President Tatar said that despite the arduous efforts of the Turkish Cypriot Side, the Greek Cypriot Side have rejected at least 15 settlement plans and ideas. "Therefore, we are today putting forward a new vision and new policy, which is fully supported by Türkiye, for a two State settlement, that allows the two Sides to co-exist as friendly neighbours in a cooperative relationship," he added.
President Tatar added that the "clock cannot be turned back" with regards to the factual realities on the ground in Cyprus.
"Those who wish to avoid the realities, contradict the reality, scientific and historical facts, are today claiming that there are one people on the Island. This is simply not true," he said.
President Tatar said: "A politician, especially a statesman, is under a great responsibility to have a long-term vision to correctly evaluate domestic and international issues without prejudice. . . with due consideration of different perspectives and dimensions," President Tatar said. "Transforming the world and building a future is, of course, within the nature of human beings, but we can do this on the basis of concrete facts and scientific data. The courage to overcome stereotypes and prejudices and express facts is only possible by having a clear vision for the future," President Tatar said.
He said the Two-State settlement offers a sustainable vision that will provide peace and security on the island of Cyprus exactly for these reasons and foundations.
President Tatar said: "The eastern Mediterranean should be a region of cooperation, not conflict. All States and Peoples should be able to benefit from the energy field that will pave the way to making our region an energy distribution centre. My vision of two States in Cyprus co-existing side by side in a cooperative relationship will open a new page for Cyprus and break the never-ending merry-go-round of the last 50 years. It will significantly contribute to sustainable peace and stability in the region."
"I reiterate my gratitude to you for the award which I accept on behalf of the people of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus who have embraced my vision, to the government of the Motherland Türkiye, and especially to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who has never refrained from supporting us on this path, and to my friends for their work that has provided all kinds of scientific and political support in creating our vision.”
