President Tatar visits Halkın Sesi newspaper

President Ersin Tatar visited the Halkın Sesi newspaper in Lefkoşa – which was founded by former Turkish Cypriot leader, Dr. Fazıl Küçük, on March 14, 1942.


Paying tribute to the late leader, President Tatar said that he had played a pivotal role over the years and had devoted his entire life to organising and leading the Turkish Cyoriot people for their “national struggle” for freedom, which started during the British colonial period.


The President said that that the Halkın Sesi newspaper, which came to life in 1942, had “a very important role in uniting the Turkish Cypriot people and their struggle,” adding that “I wish to commend Mehmet Küçük – the son of Dr Fazıl Küçük, and all past and present newpaper staff for bringing this newspaper to the present day, 79 years after it was founded.”


Quoting the words of Dr. Fazıl Küçük who witnessed the proclamation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in 1983, President Tatar said that Dr Küçük had said that “I will not die in vain, after seeing these days”.

“We can never forget the great struggle and sacrifice by Dr. Küçük and he will forever live in our hearts,” he said.

President Tatar said “it is very meaningful that the newspaper founded at the time which is a symbol of our national struggle, is today continuing its publication, and it has a separate place fort he Turkish Cypriot people,” he said.
