Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Leader Tufan Erhürman has handed back the mandate of forming a government to President Ersin Tatar
CTP Leader Tufan Erhürman handed back the mandate of forming a government to President Ersin Tatar at the Office of the Presidency on Thursday.
Speaking following the meeting, Dr Erhürman said he had returned the mandate given to him on November 21 by the President to form a coalition government, after it had become evident that progress had not been made.
President Tatar said that Dr Erhürman had “worked intensively and had explored every possibility” concerning the formation of a government. The President stated that prior to Dr Erhürman, the National Unity Party (UBP) interim leader, Hamza Ersan Saner, had also returned the mandate to form a government after contacts were held with other political parties.
Explaining that the UBP has the most number of seats in the Parliamentary Assembly, President Tatar said: “We can therefore assume that there is a problem when we look at the number of political parties in Parliament. Our people would have indeed been pleased if a government had been formed by now. A government has not been established despite all the efforts,” he said.
Reminding that there were two elections held during the pandemic period, President Tatar said that “there should not be any expectations of an early general election, taking into account the situation of the people”.
President Tatar stated that Ferdi Narin Şefik, the President of the Supreme Court; President of the Supreme Council of Judicature and President of the Senior Electoral Council, have indicated that it is not right to hold an election under these circumstances.
“Therefore, there is a need to review the legislation governing the election and referendum,” President Tatar said.
“I have the mandate to secure a government within 60 days,” President Tatar said. “Thirty days of this has passed. We have another 30 days. God willing, this process will not take this long. I hope a government will be formed as early as possible. We will all help this government to be established,” he said.
Considering that there will need to be an understanding in the matter of securing a vote of confidence, the President stated that the absence of government is not beneficial for the country, because it will cause a delay in passing the state budget, which in return would be reflected on the public.
