THE STATEMENT OF TRNC PRESIDENCY CONCERNING THE DECISION TO IMPOSE SANCTIONS BY THE USA AGAINST TURKEY
We regrettably note and condemn the unsubstantiated decision to impose sanctions by the United States of America against Turkey, made on the December 14, 2020, putting forth as a reason the purchase of S-400 air defence system by Turkey. This decision has been taken against one of the most important members of NATO, and does not conform to ally relationships.
Fresh in our memories is the unjustified decision taken by the USA to impose embargoes on Turkey because of the Turkish Peace Operation that, in 1974, saved the Turkish Cypriot people from mass graves.
We also recall that, not so long ago, the USA made another unfortunate decision that lifted the arms embargo against the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus, that could be used to boost their military capabilities.
The Republic of Turkey, exercising its sovereignty, has made a decision to strengthen her own defence. The USA should respect this decision. These types of decisions against Turkey will not affect the determination of Turkey from taking all necessary measures and precautions for the protection of her national security.
We support most vehemently the constructive proposals of Motherland Turkey, the sole guarantee of the existence of the Turkish Cypriot people, calling for the matter to be resolved with dialogue and diplomacy. We await for the USA to reconsider this unfounded decision in due course.
