Evaluating the speech by President of the Republic of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the international community at the UN General Assembly in the presence of world leaders calling upon the formal recognition of the TRNC, President Tatar stated that this historic call made its mark on New York talks.
President Tatar indicated that the speech not only had reflections in New York but also in many world capitals. the The formal negotiations can only be resumed with the reaffirmation of equal international status on the basis of sovereign equality, the President said and added that the President of the Republic of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan brought this to the agenda in his speech at the UN General Assembly.
President Tatar stated that President Erdoğan pointed out in his speech that the UN should get rid of the contradiction within itself. “The UN is an institution that respects significant universal concepts and contemporary regulations such as self-determination of every people,” said the President. “But the unjust embargoes imposed on Turkish Cypriots still continue and they need to end”.
President Ersin Tatar pointed to the attempts by Greek Cypriot side and Greece aimed at turning the island of Cyprus into a Greek island, excluding Türkiye and damaging Turkish Cypriot ties with Anatolia. The President added “We ask for reaffirmation of our sovereign equality and equal international status in order to resume the formal negotiations. We will continue to explain that an agreement can only be possible with the cooperation of two separate states in Cyprus, with the will of the Republic of Türkiye and within the framework of the balances in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
