It is with great sorrow that I have learnt of the passing of Professor Dr Christian Heinze and I would like to express my sympathies and condolences to his family and friends. Dr. Christian Heinze was a great supporter of the Turkish Cypriots in their struggle for justice and freedom, and he will be missed greatly.
Dr Heinze, an administrative and constitutional lawyer, was the Assistant to the President of the Supreme Constitutional Court of the Republic of Cyprus between 1961-1963, and witnessed the historical developments and activities of the Greeks and Greek Cypriots to make Cyprus a Greek dominated island, including the Greek Cypriot instigated move ejecting the Turkish Cypriots from all state apparatus.
Dr Heinze only recently took part in a webinar, where he expressed his support for a two State settlement in Cyprus following decades of failed negotiations for a federation, where he said: “If there is no State, there is no sovereignty”.
He also reminded us as to what sovereignty is, where he said: “The word sovereignty should essentially be based on permanently established, superior authority over a territory which is then legitimised”.
We share the same views and see these as necessary to reach a viable settlement and permanent peace and stability in the island and the region.
His passing has caused myself and the Turkish Cypriot people great sadness and I send our most sincere sympathies and condolences to his family and friends. May the soul of Dr. Heinze rest in peace in heaven.
