Meeting between President Ersin Tatar and the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides has started

President Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides are meeting to explore the possibilities of opening new crossing points between the two Sides.

The meeting, which started a short while ago in the UN Buffer Zone, is being hosted by Colin Stewart, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Cyprus and Chief of Mission of the United Nations Peace Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), at his official residence.

President Tatar is accompanied by his Special Representative, Güneş Onar, whilst Mr. Christodoulides is being accompanied by his negotiator, Menelaos Menelau.

President Tatar, who has repeatedly stated that it is essential to open a new crossing point that will address the traffic congestion at Metehan,
has put forward a proposal for the opening of a second crossing point for vehicles in Lefkoşa at Haspolat.
The opening of the Haspolat crossing aims to provide relief to the congestion experienced in Metehan, to contribute to people-to-people contacts and to increase the volume of trade between the two Sides within the scope of the Green Line Regulation.
