Ceremonies are being held across the TRNC to mark the 48th anniversary of the Turkish Peace Operation which brought freedom to the Turkish Cypriot People and peace to the whole island of Cyprus.

President Ersin Tatar, who marked the official start of celebrations in his national speech that was broadcast on BRT State media with a 21-gun shot salute, is also participating in different ceremonies today.

Also visiting is Vice President of the Republic of Türkiye Fuat Oktay and other foreign dignitaries.

President Tatar laid a wreath at the martyrdom at the first ceremony this morning that was held at the Boğaz Martyrdom. Following a minutes silence, the flags of the Republic of Türkiye and TRNC were hoisted as the National Anthem was played.

President Tatar signed the “Martyrdom Special Memorial Book”, where he wrote the following:

“Dear beloved martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence and sovereignty struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people.
The Turkish Cypriot People are today continuing their existence in their own homeland and in their own State with their heads held high and free, due to the honourable struggle you put forward at the cost of sacrificing your lives.    Your great struggle and sacrifice will never be forgotten by the Turkish Cypriot People and will always be remembered with gratitude. On this occasion of the 48th anniversary of the 20 July Peace Operation, I salute you with the most heart-felt feelings of respect and gratitude. Rest in eternal peace in comfort, because the national cause you have entrusted us and the spirit will be passed on to future generations and will be kept alive forever.
May God bless your souls.”

The second ceremony was held at the Dr. Fazıl Küçük mausoleum.

Following the laying of the wreaths, the national anthem was played and the flags of Türkiye and TRNC were hoisted.

President Ersin Tatar wrote a message in the Special Book of Remembrance, that read:

"Dr Fazıl Küçük, the leader of the Turkish Cypriot People who led the honourable struggle for the Turkish Cypriots to survive and become independent, leading the defence to prevent the Turkish Cypriots from being wiped out and by organising the resistance across all regions to provide  enlightenment in the dark days. . .who became the leader of the struggle for existence and independence during the most difficult periods of that period. As we commemorate the 48th anniversary of 20 July Peace Operation, I pledge that we will never forget you and the honourable cause.

Whilst we continue on the road with our own State in the struggle for sovereignty, we will continue our just cause and honourable struggle, and shall always act together with motherland Türkiye, with the strength we derive from your ideas and ideals.    While bowing before you with respect on the 48th Anniversary of the 20 July Peace Operation, I would like to underline once again that we will not be a minority to Greek Cypriots, we will never give up our State, our sovereignty and our motherland Türkiye. May God bless your soul."

This was followed by the third ceremony this morning held at the mausoleum of Founding President Rauf Denktaş.

President Tatar laid a wreath which was followed by the hoisting of the flags of the Republic of Türkiye and TRNC.

Signing the Special Book of Remembrance, President Tatar wrote:

“Dear Founding President Rauf Raif Denktaş
Today, if we live in peace and security under the security of Motherland Türkiye and the Turkish Security Forces, it is due to the Peace Operation  with which the Turkish Cypriot people regained their freedom, sovereignty, homeland and State.   While stressing how the Turkish Cypriot people came to these days after an honourable struggle by enduring so much suffering and so many difficulties during the  the national struggle, I want to emphasise that we will continue our struggle without forgetting our past, I bow before you on this 48th anniversary of the 20 July Peace Operation. We have not forgotten you, we will not forget you, sleep in peace because the State you have established will be kept alive, sovereignty and freedom will not be given up. We remember you with great love and longing. May God bless your soul."
