President Ersin Tatar has attended the Eid al-Fitr (Bayram) prayers at the Hz. Ebubekir Mosque in Lefkoşa on Wednesday, where he also made a statement to the press.
Stating that he wished the auspicious occasion of Bayram to be one of blessing, peace and prosperity to the Turkish and Islamic world and to humanity, President Tatar said: “Our brothers and sisters are being subjected to a great deal of suffering in Gaza. May those who have lost their lives rest in peace and may Allah grant patience and strength to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones. Our greatest wish is for Bayram to be one of peace, and for the massacre taking place in Gaza to be stopped as soon as possible.”
President Tatar stated that the Turkish Cypriot People had also experienced massacres and suffering in the 1960s and 1970s similar to those being committed in Gaza, and said that “we appreciate the importance of peace and tranquillity especially on this holy occasion”.
President Tatar also commemorated the martyrs who have sacrificed their lives for the homeland as well as the "Champion Angels" – the volleyball team students of the Türk Maarif College in Gazimağusa, who lost their lives in February 2023 at the İsias Hotel in Adıyaman that collapsed during the devastating earthquakes.
President Tatar emphasised his call upon drivers to be careful, adding: “Motorists need to drive sensibly and carefully by adhering to the highway code so that fatal accidents can be avoided”
Pointing out that Bayram is about compassion, generosity, showing solidarity and leaving resentments behind, President Tatar said: “We celebrate the completion of the Holy Month of Ramadan and the arrival of Bayram in the spirit of unity, love and respect for our elders and loved ones, and by giving charity to those in need. Being a part of the Muslim World, the Turkish Cypriot People are celebrating Bayram as part of their culture, customs and traditions. I congratulate the Bayram of our nation and the whole Islamic World.”
