The two-day long ‘Workshop on Children’s Rights’, organised under the auspices of the Presidency under the leadership of First Lady Sibel Tatar, is being held in cooperation with Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and Tangül Çağıner Children's Aid Foundation.

The event, which started today, is being held at the Acapulco Resort Academia Hall in Çatalköy.  Also participating alongside President Tatar and First Lady Sibel Tatar are Minister of National Education Nazım Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Health Ali Pilli, Minister of Labour and Social Security Hasan Taçoy, some deputies and non-governmental organisations, officials from the Police force, institutions, organisations and relevant ministries.

Issues to be discussed will range from issues such as the juvenile justice system, legal regulations, health, education, neglect and abuse, and protective/preventive measures.

Addressing the opening of the workshop, President Tatar emphasised that a lot of effort was put into organising the workshop and wished the organisation success.  President Tatar stated that the world is changing rapidly and nowadays, due to their  inter-connection with the world, the children learn about the rights and laws at a much earlier age.

“The TRNC is amongst the first countries that adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child in the world and showed due sensitivity prescribed according to its provisions”

Emphasising that the TRNC is amongst the first  countries that adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child in the world and showed the sensitivity required by it, President Tatar said: “Because we are a society that has always embraced our children and made all kinds of sacrifices for their education. This is part of our customs and traditions.

“If we consume too much today, we leave debts to the children. You have to think about everything. It is not only shelter, education and health… If we pollute the environment and nature just so that we can live better today, what will we leave to for tomorrow's children? We will be usurping their rights for our own needs," President Tatar said, noting that “it is important to make the efforts so that children can find a safer, healthier and more beautiful future.”

Stating that he trusts the institutions and organisations of the TRNC, President Tatar expressed his belief that the desired system for children will be achieved.

Referring to the Russia-Ukraine war, President Tatar talked about the grievances of children due to the war and said that “there was a war in Cyprus as well... so  it is important to consider and protect the TRNC's blessings, peace, law, security and opportunities for the future of children”.
