President Ersin Tatar chairs 12th meeting of the People’s Council

“Unity and solidarity are important”

President Ersin Tatar has stated that he places great importance on keeping close relations and listening to the views of different civil organisations represented in the People’s Council established under the auspices of the Presidency.
The President made the statement during the 12th meeting he chaired of the Council, which was attended by different organisations.
The meeting was attended by officials and representatives of the Northern Cyprus Touring and Automobile Association, Cyprus Turkish Motorcycle Association, Northern Cyprus Automobile Club, Cyprus Turkish Classic Car Association, Northern Cyprus Drag and Sports Car Association, Mountain Mud Offroad Association, Northern Cyprus Offroad Association, Northern Cyprus Classic and Sports Car Club, Northern Cyprus Rally Club, Northern Cyprus Classic Jaguar Association, Güzelyurt Classic Automobile Association and Kyrenia Offroad Association.
President Tatar, in reference to the Cyprus issue, stated: “Our position is clear. We are putting forward a policy with regards to a settlement in Cyprus, that is based on the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot People and the existence of two separate and sovereign States. Our main objective in doing so is to secure the existence of the Turkish Cypriot people and to protect our State, sovereignty and freedom, in order that we reach more prosperous days.”

Stating that the Greek Cypriot Side have rejected at least 15 equality-based settlement plans and ideas for more than half-a-century as well as the UN Comprehensive Settlement [Annan] Plan in 2004 and again in Crans-Montana in 2017, President Tatar added: “Negotiations on a federal basis have therefore been exhausted. We want to open a fresh new page that allows the two Sides to co-exist and to enjoy a cooperative relationship across different fields. This is realistic, practical and sustainable. We cannot keep going around this merry-go-round. We are sincere in what we are putting forward.”

President Tatar also stated that the People’s Council, which is made up of different organisations from different asectors of society, also has sports organisations in it.
“Motorsports is a very important sports branch of our country, which has attracted a lot of interest not only from Turkish Cypriots but also from our expat and other communities living in our country.”

The President commended the organisations for “representing and promoting the TRNC at different international events and tournaments held in different countries,” he said.

The President said that he has “worked with various non-governmental organisations and associations,” and that “I am aware of your issues. I am ready to give the necessary support in order to find solutions to your problems”.

President Tatar also touched on the “unjust and inhuman isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriot People even in the field of sports,” and said “it is very important for us to maintain our unity and solidarity and to be able to convey these injustices to the international community”.
Officials and representatives of the motor sports organisations thanked President Tatar for the meeting and conveyed the issues facing them.

The meetings of the People’s Council of the Presidency will continue to be held.
