President Ersin Tatar participated in the ceremony held at the Atatürk Monument in Lefkoşa to commemorate the 101st anniversary of Victory Day – which ended the Turkish War of Independence led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

The ceremony commenced with the laying of wreaths at the monument in order of protocol, followed by a minute’s silence, playing of the National Anthem and hoisting of the flags of the Republic of Türkiye and the TRNC.   The ceremony ended with the signing of the Special Memorial Book.

President Ersin Tatar wrote the following in the Special Memorial Book:

“Dear Atatürk,
We are once again in your spiritual presence commemorating with great pride, patriotism and honour the 101st anniversary of the “30 August Victory Day” following the “Great Offensive” of the Turkish army under your command.   This offensive, which was started four days earlier on August 26 against the forces of foreign powers, was of significant importance in the Turkish War of Independence and laid the foundations for the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye, which was realised through your leadership and determination, and the sacrifices and heroic actions of the Turkish nation and army you led.

We are today marking the anniversary of this important national achievement of the Great Turkish Nation,  who showed the whole world that they were determined to defend their homeland, sovereignty and independence, and that they would never accept captivity.

Turkish Cypriots participated in that war by either physically participating in the Great Offensive at a time when the Island of Cyprus was under British Colonial Administration. Those who were unable to travel to the battlefield supported the Turkish War of Independence by providing other means of support in the form of aid and of course heartfelt moral support.

The Great Offensive and Turkish War of Independence has become a beacon of strength and inspiration for the Turkish Cypriot People, whose own victory came about with the proclamation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which followed many years of defending their inherent rights including their sovereignty and equality, and their desire to live in freedom.  The Turkish Cypriot People will continue to walk on the same path in solidarity with the Republic of Türkiye, and will never give up on their sovereignty and State.

We commemorate with gratitude all our martyrs and veterans - who for centuries have sacrificed their lives for independence, from the victory in the Battle of Manzikert to the conquest of İstanbul; the conquest of Cyprus to the Çanakkale Victory; the Great Offensive to the Turkish War of Independence and the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye.   May our martyrs rest in eternal peace.

Dear Atatürk,

I hereby promise in your spiritual presence that we will continue to defend with determination our homeland, which has been entrusted to us by our martyrs and heroic veterans.  Rest in eternal peace.”
