President Ersin Tatar gave the mandate of forming the government to UBP Chairman and Prime Minister Dr. Faiz Sucuoğlu: "It is important for a stable government to be formed that will work in harmony, without a quorum problem "

President Ersin Tatar handed over the mandate of forming a new government to National Unity Party (UBP) Chairman and Prime Minister Dr. Faiz Sucuoğlu.

Dr. Sucuoğlu and the UBP delegation visited the office of the Presidency today at 11:00am and had an online meeting with President Ersin Tatar, who is continuing to work in isolation in his office, after testing positive for Covid-19 last week.  
 
 
In the online meeting, President Tatar stated that "it is important for the government to work in harmony and to govern the TRNC in the best way". 
 
 
President Ersin Tatar said that he handed the mandate of forming the government to Prime Minister and Chairman of the UBP Dr. Faiz Sucuoğlu, in accordance with the Constitution. Stating that there was an expectation for him to hand the mandate to the political party with most seats in Parliament following the General Election on January 23, the President stated that he has handed the mandate to Dr Sucuoğlu, following the Parliamentary Oath taking ceremony.  
 
 
“A new era has begun”
 
 
Congratulating all the deputies, President Tatar stated that a new era has started after the oath-taking ceremony and said his  wish is for the TRNC to be well-governed without a quorum problem, in accordance with the will of the people.  
 
 
Underlining the importance of having a coalition which works in harmony, President Tatar stated in reference to the Cyprus issue, that the "majority support for the new policy, which is based on the sovereign equality and equal international status of the two sides. . .is a policy that is fully supported by the Republic of Turkey". 
 
 
The President said he wishes for the new government programme to include the support to the two State policy, adding it is the expectation of the country for the economic difficulties to be addressed.  
 
 
 
The importance of harmony in the cabinet...
 
 
Expressing the importance of having a harmonious coalition and solidarity in decision making, President Tatar added: “A stable government that will work in harmony without quorum problems which will last for at least four to five years is important. Every effort should be made to strengthen the TRNC across all fields.”
 
 
 
Dr. Faiz Sucuoğlu in response expressed that there are economic problems experienced all over the world due to the pandemic, and said that they will do their best with new sectoral expansions and investments, with the contribution of the Motherland Turkey, to minimise the difficulties faced by different sectors and people.
 
 
 
"We fully support President Tatar's policy on the Cyprus issue"
 
 
Stating that the UBP "fully supports the policy put forward by President Tatar in relation to the Cyprus issue," Dr. Sucuoğlu stated that after receiving the mandate to form the government, they will form a six-member committee consisting of deputies today, and that they will commence formal meetings with other political parties for coalition talks.
 
 
“Well-structured government can work without quorum problems”
 
Reminding that they decided to call for early elections due to the quorum problem that was being lived in Parliament, Dr. Sucuoğlu added: "Our objective is to form a new government which will not have quorum problems."
