President Ersin Tatar holds a telephone conversation with President of the Republic of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan

President Ersin Tatar has held a telephone conversation with President of the Republic of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, where they exchanged views on the “Athens Declaration on Friendly Relations and Good-Neighbourliness”.
 
The declaration was signed at the 5th meeting of the High-Level Cooperation Council between the Republic of Türkiye and Greece on December 7, 2023.
 
During the telephone conversation, the two Presidents evaluated the steps to be taken in the coming period and stressed the importance of the cooperation proposals between two States which were prepared on a win-win principle that will benefit both Sides, the Island of Cyprus and our region. These proposals have been conveyed by President Tatar via the UN Secretary-General to the Greek Cypriot leader.
 
The two Presidents also agreed that cooperation between the two Sides that will be of benefit to the two Peoples is of great importance until a final settlement is reached.
 
President Ersin Tatar proposed cooperation on hydrocarbon resources around the island which belong to both sides, for connecting the island to the EU interconnection system through the Republic of Türkiye, making effective use of solar energy for transition to green energy, making rational use and development of freshwater resources on both Sides, curbing irregular migration and de-mining the Island of Cyprus.
 
President Tatar had also advised the UN Secretary-General, whom he had met in New York last September, that he is ready to meet with the Greek Cypriot leader in a tripartite meeting to be hosted by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, to initiate a cooperation dialogue that would make it possible to discuss these proposals.
