President Ersin Tatar participated in a ceremony marking the 19 May Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day.

The state ceremony was held at the Atatürk Monument in Lefkoşa in the morning.

In his speech at the ceremony, President Tatar stated that it is the 106th anniversary of when Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his 16 friends arrived in Samsun on the freight ship named "Bandırma" -- which was the start of the War of Independence of the Turkish nation. He said the TRNC is also celebrating the national day along with Motherland Türkiye.

Referring to the importance of the struggle for freedom and independence of the Turkish Cypriot people -- whom he said are following the revolutionary principles and legacy of Atatürk -  President Tatar said: "In 1938, Atatürk officially dedicated May 19 to the youth of the Turkish nation as Youth and Sports Day. Turkish Cypriot People have always closely followed and embraced the principles of Atatürk, and continued the struggle to protect their sovereignty, freedom and independence. Our struggle against major injustices by the international community is continuing. The injustices on the Turkish Cypriot people will inevitably end sooner or later."

President Tatar stressed that it is "the national obligation,  particularly for our youth, to continue the struggle and defend the TRNC,  our rights in the Blue Homeland and the eastern Mediterranean -- in cooperation with the Republic of Türkiye".

President Tatar said that the successes and capabilities of what can be achieved by the Turkish youth were exhibited at TEKNOFEST and that although the Turkish Cypriot youth still continue to face inhumane isolation, they "declared to the whole world as to what they can succeed in sports with its 33 [sports] federations, and , especially in football."
