The President said that he will hand the mandate to form the new Government after the Higher Electoral Council (YSK) has published the list of elected MP’s in the Official Gazette and following Parliamentary Oath taking by deputies in the Parliamentary Assembly.

Stating that the electoral ‘silence’ [prohibitions] will continue until the new Government is formed, President Tatar stated that Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu will submit his resignation following the oath taking ceremony of Parliamentarians. The President said that he will ask Dr. Sucuoğlu to continue as Acting Prime Minister until the new Government is formed.

Following his meetings with the leaders of each political party and the Attorney General, the President spoke to the press, where he wished the election results “to be beneficial for the country”, adding: “We had an opportunity to evaluate the election outcome and the way forward. I have met with the leaders of each political party in the hope that the process to form a new Government can be speeded up.”

Stating that there was also a meeting with the Attorney General, President Tatar pointed out that the government, which will be formed following the Parliamentary Oath taking ceremony, is required to receive a vote of confidence from the newly elected TRNC Assembly.

Underlining that the new government will be accountable to the new TRNC Assembly, President Tatar reiterated that the current government and the TRNC Assembly are continuing their service to the country, albeit on a temporary basis, as required by the Constitution. Expressing that the TRNC Assembly will convene 10 days after the YSK declares the results of the election, the President said that an appointment will be made following the Oath taking ceremony by MP’s. “We expect the process to form a new Government to be started without delay and I will hand the mandate to Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu,” he said.

Expressing belief that “preparations will be made to form a new Government without delay,” the President added: "The picture is clear. I believe that the necessary preparations will be made in advance for the rapid formation of the new government,” he said, adding: “The state, the republic, is in need of a durable TRNC Assembly and government during this period.”

Pointing to the importance of the work of the Parliament and Parliamentary committees, President Tatar said that he expects the government to open the Parliamentary Assembly session without having a quorum issue, and to start working to create a good future for the country and the people.

“Turkish Cypriot people have shown their will”

President Tatar thanked everyone who voted in the election and the “democratic maturity” shown by the public.  “The political will of the Turkish Cypriot people has been reaffirmed. I want to thank those who participated and voted in the elections and the democratic maturity shown during this phase,” he said.

Pointing out that there are many citizens living abroad who are named on the electoral list, President Tatar said that the parliament could address this issue in the new period and ensure that citizens abroad are able to vote wherever they are.

The President stated that there was a lower turnout in voting because of the Covid-19 pandemic, adding that it is “important to have a stable and efficient functioning of the government in order to be able to carry out reforms and take measures if needed. . .the new government will be responsible to address the issue of how to tackle these issues with the support of Turkey. I wish for the new government to be established as soon as possible,” he said.

“Greek Cypriot side is trying to portray Turkish Cypriots as not being a sovereign people”

Answering a question in relation to “Handing over Maraş in return for [direct] flights to Ercan airport”, the President said that he advised people not to give credit to such items that appear in the press.  “These are serious issues. The fundamental issue is one of sovereignty and sovereign equality”.

Expressing that the Greek Cypriot side is trying to portray the Turkish Cypriots as not being a sovereign people,  President Tatar stated that the issue reflected in the press was not convincing and that they did not take any notice of this.
