President Ersin Tatar paid tribute to Turkish Cypriot Leader Dr. Fazıl Küçük – who led the Turkish Cypriots in their struggle for freedom and independence, at a ceremony at Anıttepe in Hamitköy which commemorated the 38th anniversary of his passing.

President Tatar commemorated Dr. Küçük “with the deepest love, respect and longing,” adding that “he devoted his life to the cause in Cyprus, while trying to organise the Turkish Cypriot people on the island. At the same time, he showed the world the reality that there are two distinct Peoples who are co-owners of Cyprus. He attended many rallies in Turkey, and ensured that the plight of the Turkish Cypriot people was noticed”.

“Today, we have a State and a Republic and the Republic of Turkey continues to be by our side”

Stating that the troubles in Cyprus had started in 1937, President Tatar said that the mentality of the Greek-Greek Cypriot duo is the same today. He said Turkish Cypriots were forced out of 103 villages after their homes were burnt down or destroyed; Dr. Küçük allowed his own properties to be used in order to provide  housing for the resettlement of the victims. “This shows how much sacrifice Dr. Küçük showed during the days of hardship,” the President said. “Today, the foresight of Dr. Küçük is more appreciated with the developments taking place in the eastern Mediterranean. We remember Dr. Küçük with love, respect and  gratitude as well as his friends and Founding President Rauf Raif Denktaş. May they rest in peace".

“There is a new understanding, a new vision and a new policy in the TRNC”

President Tatar said: “Today, we have a State, a Republic, and  Turkey is always with us and supporting us against the whole world. If the sovereign existence of the Turkish Cypriots on the island is not accepted, there would be no agreement in Cyprus."

Noting that it is necessary to know where the Turkish Cypriots came from, President Tatar underlined that in the calls made to the people,  it is important to include a settlement that is based on sovereignty. He stated that today there is a new understanding, a new vision and a new policy in the TRNC. Recalling  the famous expression of Dr. Fazıl Küçük, the President concluded his speech by saying: “The Cyprus issue cannot be resolved without Turkey".

President Tatar wrote the following in the Memorial Special Book:

“Leader of our struggle for freedom and independence: The Great Leader Dr. Fazıl Küçük”

As the struggle for freedom and sovereignty, which you started by lighting the torch of resistance, continues in the darkest of days and under the most severe conditions, today we stand in your presence once again and remember you with respect, love and great longing.

In the struggle for existence that you lead; While the principles of ‘Turkish Cypriots cannot exist without Turkey’ and ‘Cyprus issue cannot be resolved without Turkey’ continue to be our guide; these principles illuminate our path and give strength to our struggle.

While we continue to fight with the inspiration and strength  we derive from your principles, we are determined to keep alive forever the TRNC, the  foundation of which you laid through great sacrifices.

As you have stated, we will not be the minority of Greeks in these lands which we know as our homeland; We will never give up our State, our freedom, our independence, Turkey and Turkish troops.

Our dear leader, sleep well. Your struggle for the Turkish Cypriot people to reach today, your devotion and sacrifices in this struggle will never be forgotten and will be passed on from generation to generation. You live in the hearts and struggles of the Turkish Cypriot people.

Rest in eternal Peace.”
