President Ersin Tatar participated in a fast-breaking event that was hosted by the Rebirth Party (YDP) at the Acapulco Hotel in Çatalköy.

The President, who addressed the event, drew importance to the Holy Month of Ramadan, which he said is a time of prayer, compassion and giving charity to the needy in the sprit of solidarity.

“We are here today to break our fasting together, and I thank you, the YDP, and Leader Erhan Arıklı, for inviting me. I was elected as President with the support of YDP,” President Tatar said.

Stating that the “Turkish Cypriot People are a part of the Islamic World,” the President stated that “ what binds us together is our love for Motherland Türkiye, our Homeland the TRNC, and the love for our flag. A struggle is being waged in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, for an independent Turkish state in the eastern Mediterranean and to strengthen the state where we can raise good children worthy of the Turkish nation”.

President Tatar stated that the Turkish Cypriot People endorsed his two State position by democratically electing him as President in 2020.

“The two State position, on the basis of sovereign equality and equal international status, was brought by us to the agenda at the highest level in the Republic of Türkiye, which was a position that we developed. The Greek Cypriot Side has rejected all federal-based solution plans, the last being the UN Comprehensive Settlement (Annan) Plan in the separately held simultaneous referenda in April 2024. Last and final negotiations for a federation also collapsed in July 2017 in Crans-Montana. A settlement under this basis has not worked because the Greek Cypriot Side refuses to share governance and the resources of the Island with the Turkish Cypriot People on the basis of equality. The Turkish Cypriot Side has not reached the two State position overnight. We have come to this point because federal based negotiations have been exhausted. We have closed the federation chapter,” President Tatar said.

Stating that Motherland Türkiye has “always been by the side of the Turkish Cypriot People,” President Tatar emphasised that “despite the pandemic, conflicts in our region and other parts of the world, the February 6, 2023 devastating earthquakes in Türkiye, and the international isolation imposed on us, the TRNC has continued to develop primarily with the support of the Republic of Türkiye”.

President Tatar pointed out that the Republic of Türkiye, under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, “fully supports new position of the Turkish Cypriot people,” adding: “President Erdoğan has repeatedly, in his addresses at the 77th, 78th and 79th sessions of the UN General Assembly, called on the international community to support a two State settlement on the Island of Cyprus, for an end to the inhumane isolation of the Turkish Cypriot People, and for the formal recognition of the TRNC.”

President Tatar noted that, due to his new position, the visibility of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has increased in the last four-and-a-half years, and that the international community has become more aware that there are two separate States, two peoples and two democracies in Cyprus.

President Tatar pointed to the demands made by the Greek Cypriot side during federal based negotiations for “zero-troops, zero-guarantees,” and added that this, alongside the absence of Türkiye in the EU, would put Turkish Cypriot survival at stake, and would leave them isolated and open to assimilation.

The President stated that a “realistic, permanent and sustainable settlement in Cyprus that would serve as a beacon of peace and stability for the Island and the region would be a settlement that is based on good neighbourly relations. These are the type of messages that I will be giving at the informal meeting in Geneva,” the President said.

Stating that people are struggling to survive in dire conditions in the conflicts taking place in the world, President Tatar said that in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the people live in peace and tranquillity, and are able to fulfil their religious obligations as a free people.
