President Ersin Tatar receives Ayşe Kanlıada, Chairperson of Help Those With Cancer Association (Tulips): Briefing on the results of the cancer screening campaign launched at the Presidency
President Ersin Tatar has paid tribute to the long-standing work of Help Those With Cancer Association (Tulips) when he received the organisation’s Chairperson Ayşe Kanlıada at the Presidency on Thursday.
Mrs. Kanlıada briefed the President about the results of the cancer screening campaign that was launched at the Presidency on March 3, and effected across different regions within the scope of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
Stating that Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests were performed on 749 people who undertook a blood test on a voluntary basis within the scope of the campaign, Mrs. Kanlıada said that according to the results, 109 people were asked to apply to the relevant authorities for further tests. President Tatar said: “March is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and should be used to raise awareness about prostate cancer. Everybody has a responsibility to undertake the necessary tests as this disease may not display symptoms at an early stage. I wish to pay tribute to Help Those With Cancer Association (Tulips) for your excellent work over the years in helping cancer patients and their families. It was not easy to conduct 749 tests during this time period and I pay tribute to everybody and thank them for participating in the campaign.”
Stressing that “scientific data has shown that prostate cancer is potentially curable when detected at an early stage,” President Tatar said: “Early diagnosis is vital so that treatment can be started whilst the disease is at an early stage. The screening campaign undertaken at the Presidency has indeed been beneficial. I wish to reiterate that blood tests should be carried out on all males aged 50 and over.”
President Tatar paid tribute to the former Tulips Chairperson, Raziye Kocaismail, who had founded and chaired the organisation for many years. “Mrs. Kanlıada has stated that there have been recorded approximately 20,000 cancer cases currently in our country. This figure cannot be underestimated. Generations are changing, however the number of cancer cases are not decreasing,” President Tatar said.
Stating that the “duty of the State and non-governmental organisations is to raise awareness and contribute to people receiving the necessary treatments with early diagnosis," President Tatar noted that “living healthier lives and making lifestyle changes, as well as early diagnosis through regular testing, will contribute positively in the fight against cancer”.
President Tatar, who also thanked health workers for their contributions to the screening process, said: “Our doctors and health workers are at the forefront in the fight against cancer. I wish to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all our healthcare personnel.”
The President added that “new approaches and medical advancement, as well as new treatment methods are being developed by scientists, which will have a knock-on effect globally. Qualified and well-educated young health workers and doctors will deliver the people to the future. We are seeing that many diseases and their characteristics are changing, so there is a need to be prepared for this.”
Kanlıada: “We currently have approximately 20,000 cancer patients”
Tulips Chairperson Ayşe Kanlıada thanked the President for the meeting, and underlined that “March is Prostate Cancer awareness Month”.
“We launched our screening campaign at the Presidency on March 3. I wish to thank the President for his support in raising awareness on this very important issue, and for the screening of Presidential staff,” Mrs. Kanlıada said.
Stating that treatment, care and medicine of cancer are provided by the administrations, Mrs. Kanlıada said: “I wish to emphasise again, the importance of early diagnosis and awareness.”
Explaining that screenings were carried out in institutions and markets in certain regions within the scope of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Mrs. Kanlıada thanked the President and members of the Laboratories Association and the Near East University Hospital for their contributions.
