President Ersin Tatar received the delegation of the Naval Academy in the TRNC on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of the 20 July Cyprus Peace Operation.

Welcoming the delegation in the TRNC from the Naval Academy, President Tatar stated that the Turkish Cypriot people “gained freedom 48 years ago”, and that they “continue to strive for the strengthening and development of the TRNC despite the unjust isolation on top of the other worldwide developments which also has had an impact on the TRNC like the other countries of the world”.

President Tatar said the TRNC is working closely with Motherland Türkiye to “protect our legitimate rights in maritime areas, territorial waters, and the economic exclusive zone in the Blue Homeland in the eastern Mediterranean”.  He added that “we are honored and proud to act together with Motherland Türkiye of which we share the same historical roots and ties”, and expressed the importance of strengthening  dominance in the eastern Mediterranean.

“Negotiations for a federal based settlement has been exhausted” the President continued. “The Greek Cypriot Side has on numerous counts rejected all  equality-based settlement plans and ideas for more than half-a-century. The Greek Cypriot Side has a mentality of seeing Turkish Cypriots as a minority and see themselves as the masters. This situation has been exacerbated due to their EU membership. However, Turkish Cypriot Side will never abandon the Guarantee of Türkiye or consent to the withdrawal of the Turkish army over any period of time, because this would be our end,” the President stated.

President Tatar underlined the position that was put forward by the Turkish Cypriot Side with the full support of Türkiye in Geneva in 2021, for a new page to be opened in Cyprus. “The reaffirmation of the sovereign equality of the Turkish Cypriot People is an inherent right,” the President said, adding: “There are two separate Peoples, the Turkish Cypriot People and the Greek Cypriot People in Cyprus. We are explaining the injustices being enforced on Turkish Cypriots  at every opportunity to international actors and the world,” he said.
