In his statement, the President said he had been shocked to learn about the incident, adding: “I have full faith in our police, that they will identify and track down the perpetrators immediately and bring them to justice.”

He added: “The brutal act of killing four dogs by hanging them from a tree in the Karpaz has deeply wounded my heart, like every person with a conscience.  Just like violence against women or children, it is our humanitarian duty to stand our ground against the use of violence and those who are weak and against brutal acts against animals.

One consolation is the magnitude of public expression of condemnation and outrage against this act of cruelty and the social sense that exists.

Turkish Cypriots are compassionate people who love animals and people; the social attitude displayed is proof of this. The Animal Welfare Law, which was enacted unanimously by our Assembly on March 4, 2013 for the survival of our animal friends in a safe and healthy environment, should be our guide at this point. I have full faith that the perpetrators of this outrageous incident will be identified and tracked down by our police immediately and brought to justice.

As the President, I pledge that I will closely monitor the outcome of this investigation.”
