President Ersin Tatar visited the families in order to pay respects as the TRNC prepares to commemorate Martyrs’ Week – which begins on December 21.

The President visited the home of the Lalehan and Beşgül families in the Lefke and Güzelyurt regions, where he stated that “forgetting the martyrs and the pain and suffering endured by the Turkish Cypriots is out of the question”.

President Tatar said: “The suffering inflicted on the Turkish Cypriot people and the struggle we have fought on this land can never be forgotten. If we now have freedom and independence, if we were able to establish a State and a Republic here, it is thanks to our martyrs. With all my heart, I share the pain of the martyrs’ families. I wish God's mercy and eternal peace on all our martyrs and for their families to have the patience to endure the pain of their losses.”
