President Ersin Tatar's Special Representative M. Ergün Olgun meets with the Deputy Assistant Secretary Erika Olson at the US Department of State

Special Representative Olgun conveyed to the high level US State Department official the disappointment and concern of the Turkish Cypriot side with regards to the decision on lifting the arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot side.

Stating that counter steps will be taken together with Motherland Türkiye against this decision, which poses a threat to the security of the Turkish Cypriot people, Ergün Olgun said we closely follow the armament activities of the Greek Cypriot leadership and that any hostile actions will be reciprocated.

Ergün Olgun stated that we expect the United States to support the Turkish Cypriot side's cooperation proposals that will make contributions to both sides, to the Island of Cyprus and to the stability of the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Indicating that it is pointless to insist on an exhausted ground, which serves nothing but the continuation of the status quo, Special Representative Olgun emphasised that sovereign equality and equal international status, which is the inherent right of the Turkish Cypriot people, must be reaffirmed as a requirement of equality in order to launch a new formal process.

Olgun further said that the international community, particularly the US, bear responsibilities in eliminating the political and economic disparity between the two sides in order to build reconciliation conditions in Cyprus.

Confidence Building Measures and Bilateral Technical Committees Coordinator Güneş Onar and TRNC Washington Representative Office Third Secretary Denil Ertuğ Akın were present in the meeting.
