President Tatar attended the commemoration ceremony of former Speaker of the Parliament and former Prime Minister Osman Örek

President Ersin Tatar attended the commemoration ceremony of the former Speaker of the Assembly and former Prime Minister Osman Örek on the 22nd anniversary of his death at his grave at Lefkoşa State Cemetery.

Wreaths were laid at the grave, a moments silence was observed and flags were hoisted with the Turkish National Anthem.



“Osman Örek was a fighter”


In his speech at the ceremony, President Ersin Tatar commemorated the late Prime Minister Osman Örek and his wife Neriman Örek with affection and respect.

The President said Mr Örek was a real statesman, who served alongside Dr. Fazıl Küçük and Founding President Rauf R.Denktaş, in their years of struggle that included, amongst others, the inclusion of the Guarantee of Turkey which was enshrined in the Zurich and London Treaties.

“Osman Örek was a fighter who made great contributions to the Turkish Cypriot people's place in history as one of the two founding equal partners of the Republic of Cyprus ... May his soul rest in peace," he said.



"THE CURRENT STRUGGLE IS THE CONTINUATION OF THEIR EFFORTS"

 

Stating that Mr Örek was also a lawyer who always emphasised the importance of  independence, freedom and sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriot people, the President said that the “current struggle is the continuation of their efforts”.

President Tatar recalled the extensive struggle of Osman Örek and that of his colleagues as well as their services to the people and stated that they were endeavouring to continue the struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people and to ensure that later generations continue to live in a secure future.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, President Tatar said: "We emphasise that there may be an agreement in Cyprus based on the sovereign equality of two States that are in coexistence side-by-side that enjoy a cooperative relationship, and we will convey this reality to the whole world in Geneva on April 27-29".
