President Tatar: “The torch lit by Dr. Küçük will not be extinguished”

President Ersin Tatar said that he has consulted the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, about the prospect of renaming the new airport to Dr. Fazıl Küçük.

President Tatar stated that the officials of the Republic of Turkey were also pleased about this situation and added that giving the name of Martyr Pilot Captain Ercan to Geçitkale Airport is being considered.

The President made the remarks during a visit by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dr.Fazıl Küçük Foundation, Mehmet Küçük, and his accompanying delegation.

During the meeting, the President said that at the five-plus-UN informal meeting held in Geneva last week,  the Turkish Cypriot side “took a historical step and emphasised the dangers of the federation thesis for the Turkish Cypriots”.

“THIS GAME WAS RUINED IN GENEVA”

Stating that a federal structure with a single sovereignty in the EU means that the Turkish Cypriots come under the domination of the Greek Cypriot side, President Tatar said: “The perception of the Greek Cypriot side about the federation is not the same as ours. The game has been ruined in Geneva.”

"THERE IS AN INSIDIOUSMESSAGE IN ANASTASIADIS' SPEECH”

President Tatar also criticised the speech of the Greek Cypriot leader where he referred to the Turkish Cypriots as his "citizens”.  Emphasising that there is an insidious message in the discourse of Anastasiades, he underlined that the Greek Cypriot leader use of this definition is inappropriate.

“HOW CAN AN AGREEMENT BE POSSIBLE WITH SUCH MENTALITY?”

Referring to the statement made by Anastasiades on April 1, 2021, where he stated that "Cyprus is an integral part of Hellenism” and praised the so called “EOKA heroes” the President asked: “How can an agreement be possible with this kind of mentality?” President Tatar highlighted the importance of an agreement based on two sovereign cooperating States that co-exist side-by-side that are in a cooperative relationship.

‘DR. FAZIL KÜÇÜK’ AIRPORT…

President Tatar drew attention to the important role played by Dr Fazıl Küçük in reaching these days and the importance of the doctor’s contributions to social solidarity and national consciousness, underlining that he closely follows the activities of the Dr Fazıl Küçük Foundation.

A STRONG MESSAGE ABOUT OUR SOVEREIGNTY…

The President said that giving the name of Dr. Fazıl Küçük to the airport under construction is being evaluated with the approval of the government. He added that such step would give a strong message to the world regarding the freedom struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people.

“THE TORCH LIT BY DR. KUCUKAND THE STATE WE OBTAINED... "

Stating that the Turkish Cypriots owned their sovereign state to the torch lit by Dr. Küçük, the President said that through a settlement based on the cooperation of two sovereign states, important successes could be achieved.

 “OUR SOVEREIGNTY IS INHERENT RIGHT”

Emphasising that the status and importance of the TRNC increased after the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, President Tatar emphasised that the sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriots is a historical right and cannot be a matter of debate.

During the meeting, Mehmet Küçük informed President Tatar about the activities and problems of the foundation and presented books published by the foundation to the President, together with a letter setting out the reasons and requesting Dr Fazil Küçük’s name to be given to the new airport.

Presidential Press and Broadcast Research Archive Advisor Aydın Akkurt were also present at the meeting.
