President Ersin Tatar attended the commemoration ceremony held at the grave of the late statesman, Mustafa Çağatay, the first Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Prime Minister, on the 32nd anniversary of his death.

Speaking at the commemoration ceremony held this morning in the Karaoğlanoğlu Cemetery, President Ersin Tatar said: "Don't let the facts of history be distorted," and added that the Greek Cypriot leader, Nicos Anastasiades, had recently stated that “EOKA was the organisation of liberation fighters and heroes, and that the main terrorist organisation was the Turkish Resistance Organisation (TMT).” President Tatar said this statement was a distortion of realities and did not reflect the truth.
President Tatar said: “We have not forgotten what happened and we will never forget it. We have to maintain our sovereignty in order to crown the efforts and services of people like Çağatay. The Turkish Cypriot people exist and will exist in these lands.”
The President stated that due to the intransigence of the Greek Cypriot side, in order to have sustainable peace, the Turkish Cypriot side will be putting forward in Geneva, Switzerland a proposal for settlement to be on the basis of sovereign equality and cooperative relationship of two states coexisting side by side, adding
"We will explain our position to all sides with the support of Turkey. If there is going to be an agreement, we are already announcing to the world that it will have to be after we consider very carefully and in detail the lessons we have learnt from the past negotiations.
President Tatar said that from an early age, he used to hear that Mustafa Çağatay was an honest statesman. “We lost him prematurely, we would have benefited from his experiences if he had lived. Life goes on. . . the important thing is to be able to keep the State alive and strengthen it ”.
Stating that Çağatay served at every level of the state during his lifetime from Limassol to Girne, President Tatar said: “Mr Çağatay has contributed to the success of the Turkish Cypriot history in the last 50 years. The struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people is still continuing, with the support of motherland Turkey.”
Pointing to the five-plus-UN informal meeting to be held in Geneva on April 27-29, President Tatar said: “Due to the intransigence of the Greek Cypriot side, we will go to Geneva to put forward our vision which is the cooperation of two States coexisting side-by-side in Cyprus that is based on sovereign equality. We will explain our position to the parties with the support of Turkey. If Mr Çağatay was alive, I am sure he would be fully supportive of our position.”

The President explained that the TRNC was continuing its development and was growing stronger as each day passes, and said in reference to the eastern Mediterranean, that “We are able to stand firm and adopt an honourable policy in this region together with Turkey. We have to continue our existence and sovereignty as a people, in order to honour and crown the efforts and services of people like Çağatay”.

We deny and detest this, and standing by the grave of Mr Çağatay, we wish to say to the Greek Cypriots , that we have not forgotten, nor will we forget. They should not distort history. The Turkish Cypriot people exist on these lands and will continue to exist.
