The Statement of Presidential Spokesperson, Berna Çelik Doğruyol:
On January 11, 2021, President Ersin Tatar will receive UN Senior Official Jane Holl Lute at his office.
President Tatar will convey to Ms Lute the vision of the Turkish Cypriot side about the development of relations through cooperation with the Greek Cypriot side, based on the sovereign equality of the Turkish Cypriot side and equal international status of both parties prior to the 5+UN informal meeting.
The President will also convey that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready to start negotiations on this basis and that a realistic and sustainable agreement would only be possible in Cyprus in negotiations pursued within this understanding and framework.
President Tatar will share our belief that the cooperation to be built between the two sides on the basis of two equal States will help bring about stability as well as security on the island and the wider region, and open the way for interdependency and new trade relations.
The President views the 5+UN format informal meeting as an opportunity with the objective of paving a way towards a compromise in Cyprus, and will convey to Ms Lute that he supports the said meeting having been organised without any preconditions.
The President will also convey that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready to start negotiations on this basis and that a realistic and sustainable agreement would only be possible in Cyprus in negotiations pursued within this understanding and framework.
