The Zero Waste Project launches in Türk Maarif College

“The Zero Waste Lefkoşa Türk Maarif College Pilot Project”, under the leadership of First Lady Sibel Tatar and under the auspices of Presidency supported by Tatlısu Municipality, launched with a ceremony held today.

Within the scope of the project, a dwarf elephant, a Mediterranean monk seal, plastic bottle and metal can waste collection container and 12 waste sorting containers were placed in the school, and students were informed about the importance of recycling and waste parsing.

President Ersin Tatar's wife First Lady Sibel Tatar was accompanied by Tatlısu Mayor Hayri Orçan, Head of Presidential Tourism and Environment Committee Özge Özden, Nicosia Türk Maarif College Principal Candan Kortay. Teachers and students attended the event that took place at Lefkoşa Türk Maarif College at 10:00 am.

TATAR: WE ALL HAVE RESPONSIBILTY FOR A LIVABLE FUTURE

In her speech, First Lady Tatar stated that they gathered for the implementation of a very beautiful project and that their daughters also graduated from the Türk Maarif College and that the school has an emotional importance for them.

Noting that we all have a responsibility for the protection of the environment and a livable future and that cooperation is needed for a common solution and solidarity, First Lady Tatar said: “That’s why we have started this project.”

“As well as cooperating with you, we also have a responsibility towards nature, the environment, the economy of the country and to ourselves. Therefore, we need to be involved in the recycling project,” she added.

Mrs. Tatar pointed out that the first of this project was launched in Tatlısu Municipality and that the project, which has achieved 85 percent success so far, is continued in the Türk Maarif College after a secondary school in Lefkoşa, and gave information about the project. Mrs. Tatar stated that recycling is of great importance in terms of environment and economy.

First Lady Tatar continued:

“Different wastes will be collected and recycled into a life-size dwarf elephant model and the endangered Mediterranean seal model that lived in our country 2.5 million years ago. You can collect glass, plastic and paper waste not only at school but also from your homes and bring them here. Within the scope of the project we launched in Tatlısu, we have produced 128 tons of glass, 22.5 tons of plastic, 38.3 tons of paper, 310 tons of green waste, and 1,550 kg domestic oil, 20 kg. battery and 17 kg. medical waste were collected in the last year and a half.”

At the end of her speech, First Lady Sibel Tatar thanked everyone who contributed to the project and expressed her wish for such projects to become a state policy.
